About the author

Eduard Nikolayevich Uspensky started his literary career in 1964 with short stories on newspapers and magazines, and started writing children’s novels in 1965.
Starting off with <Crocodile Gena and His Friends>, his works has been loved by Russian children for decades. His works have been translated into 25 different languages, and most of them were adapted into cartoons.

Tumble, Cheburashka

Cheburashka first appeared in , and attained its place as Russia’s national character with the stop motion animated series in 1971. Based on published works Cheburashka is a narrative character that has been made into theatrical and TV animations, and features interesting and adorable stories about friendship, sincerity, and endeavor. It is a globally renowned character that is popular not only in Russia but also in Sweden, Norway, Denmark, plus Japan and Taiwan. Cheburashka, who accidentally traveled far from his tropical home in a crate of oranges, tends to tumble a lot. So the owner of the fruit stand who found him named him Cheburashka, a Russian colloquialism meaning “tumbled”. A theatrical animation was released in Korea in 2013, and TV animation was broadcasted on JEI TV as ‘Tumble, Cheburashka’.

Cheburashka’s many charms

Cheburashka’s contents vary from picture books, TV animation, to theatrical stop-motion animation. One of his biggest appeals is that he could change the color of his body whenever he wants. Cheburashka’s charms, continued from his inception in 1967, makes future long term marketing possible. SMC has started the licensing of Cheburashka in 2013, and various aspects of merchandize are being developed, spearheaded by publication and plush toys.
