VUODESTA 1820

The Finnish city of Tampere is a bustling city today, but in 1820 nothing has said to move except for wind. Scottish engineer James Finlayson, solely upon hearing about the ‘fast and free flowing’ Tammerkoski river, came over to Finland with 20 of his extended family and built a cotton mill on the river bank.

Institutional Corporation

Finlayson started to grow exponentially in 1836, and built housing, schools, hospitals, libraries, and a healthcare fund for employees, as well as a coop run by employees, thereby building a city in itself.

Representing Textile Industry

Finlayson has grown beyond Finland’s best to a global textile company with more than 100,000 designs over 200 years. They have grown into a corporation by merging various companies, and in 2004 they were acquired by Capman Espe Group Oy, under which they launched ‘J.F. by Finlayson Collection’, showcasing top of the line textile products. Furthermore, they have established a subsidiary called 5th Wave Brands and launched a successful worldwide licensing business.
